Certificate in Mathematical Methods Added to CQF to Strengthen Fundamentals of Quant Finance

-    CQF delegates to now have access to crucial mathematics course

NEW YORK, 10 May 2010 – 7city Learning, a leading provider of global learning and development solutions for the financial services industry, announced today that the Certificate in Mathematical Methods (CM2), originally a standalone course, will now be included as part of the Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) as additional, non-required material available to delegates. The CQF and CM2 are both courses designed for professionals working in quantitative finance, risk management and other areas of financial services that rely heavily on mathematics.

Paul Wilmott, Course Founder and Co-Director of the CQF, said, “Demand for the CM2 was so high, and graduates were so pleased with the program that we decided to integrate it into the CQF suite. The CQF, which has always emphasized a practitioner’s approach to mathematics, requires rigorous mathematical skills, and the CM2 will give our delegates the fundamentals they need to truly understand and apply many new mathematical techniques to real-world situations.” Dr Wilmott continued, “Over the past two years, the world has seen what happens when practitioners do not understand mathematics and mathematicians do not understand the practical world. With the CQF and the CM2 module, we at 7city Learning are continuing in our aim to rectify that imbalance.”

The CM2 is an intensive program that covers a variety of mathematical methods and focuses particularly on those that are applicable to real-world scenarios. The program, which is divided into two terms, consists of almost 100 hours of recorded material spread over the course of 39 lectures. In order to gain the certificate, delegates must pass an examination at the end of each term.

The CM2 is designed to follow the course structure of the first two years of a university mathematics degree, giving delegates the same formal mathematical training they would receive in a university program while still emphasizing practical over theoretical application. Topics covered during the course include: Numerical Analysis, Functions of a Complex Variable, Linear and Nonlinear Differential Equations, Partial Differential Equations, Integral Equations, Perturbation Methods and Transform Methods.

Paul Shaw, CEO of 7city Learning said, “This is an incredible opportunity for those CQF delegates interested in learning more about the mathematics underlying the field of quantitative finance. The CM2 offers delegates an enormous wealth of course material and expertise from our talented and experienced instructors, and we are excited to be able to expand our CQF offering in this way. There is no high-level finance program in the world that covers as many mathematical tools as the CQF.”

The CM2 lectures will be included as part of the CQF course of study for no extra tuition fee. Delegates wishing to gain certification will pay a $6,000 examination fee. The course previously cost $17,000 as a standalone program.
